Statistics say success in GAP Adaptive inaugural year

The inaugural GAP Adaptive season is complete. The statistics support success for GAP’s newest and most impactful opportunity.

According to the most recent data, people with disabilities make up 6.5% of the GAP Region’s population. Building on the inclusive efforts of the USGA, and other groups that serve golfers with disabilities, GAP opened its 2024 season with the goal of engaging and embracing the ever-growing Adaptive Golf community.

No Limit Clinics:

Offerings for GAP Adaptive’s pilot year began with instructional events titled No Limit Clinics, which took place at various club practice facilities throughout the GAP Region. Participants of all ages, no matter their skill level, had free access to specialized equipment and certified instructors as they honed their existing Adaptive Golf skills or tried the sport for the first time. In 2024, GAP conducted a total of 15 clinics and offered 131 participants Adaptive Golf instruction.

Inaugural GAP Adaptive Championship:

GAP Adaptive’s 2024 season culminated with the inaugural GAP Adaptive Championship, a WR4GD-counting event. The two-day, 36-hole event took place at Lookaway Golf Club and Doylestown Country Club Oct. 14-15, respectively. Registration was open to all Adaptive Golfers regardless of residence. Tee sheets for the Championship listed 55 players from 20 states and four countries. There was a total of 13 disability classifications represented. The median age for participants was 40 years old. The day would not have been possible without the help of 75 volunteers.

Issa Nlareb of Cameroon dazzled the field with a two-day score of 145 to take the Men’s Overall title by nine shots. Cassandra Sengul of Manassas, Va. carded a score of 176 to prevail in the Women’s Overall division. Champions in all 13 disability classifications were also crowned.

Equipment:

In GAP Adaptive’s inaugural year, the Association purchased two SoloRider golf cars and one ParaMotion. A SoloRider is a small, single seated, golf-cart-like vehicle Adaptive Golfers with mobility needs use to navigate the golf course and to play shots from a seated position. A SoloRider is lighter than a greens mower and is outfitted with specialized tires allowing it to traverse all parts of the golf course without damaging the turf. Currently, one SoloRider resides at Paxon Hollow Country Club and can be reserved for use at the course. Please call ahead to make arrangements.

A ParaMotion steadies golfers in a vertical position and supports them while they swing. Similarly to the SoloRider, the ParaMotion assists Adaptive Golfers requiring mobility aid with traveling around the golf course. All three of GAP’s Adaptive Golf mobility aids were used in the inaugural GAP Adaptive Championship.

These numbers provide important insights into GAP Adaptive’s inaugural season. Continuing engagement with this group of golfers will lead to improvements in programming and participation in the coming years.

GAP Adaptive

In 2024, GAP (Golf Association of Philadelphia) launched GAP Adaptive to continue its mission of promoting, preserving and protecting the game of golf for all. GAP’s Adaptive Golf committee opened the season with its first program titled No Limit Clinics, a season-long series of instructional Adaptive Golf events taking place at various GAP Member Clubs. The GAP Adaptive season culminates with the GAP Adaptive Championship, a WR4GD-counting event. The field consists of local and international Adaptive Golfers.
